Rewriting history: empowering the next generation with "Reframe the Story"
Have you ever wondered what the world would look like if a single historical event had gone differently? What if a lost battle was won, or a groundbreaking invention was never created?
This question is at the core of Reframe the Story, an innovative Erasmus+ project designed to turn classrooms into hubs of critical thinking, media literacy, and creative exploration. By using the concept of uchrony (an alternative timeline in history), the project helps students aged 8 to 15 step outside the official textbooks and imagine the “what ifs.”
What is “Reframe the Story”?
At its heart, this project is about agency. Reframe the Story is built on the idea that by teaching children to co-create alternative narratives, they will learn to question how history is constructed and to recognize the dominant perspectives that often silence other voices.
Reframe the Story has the ambition to create space for students to develop the social skills, social awareness and media literacy needed to navigate today’s complex information landscape. Rather than remaining passive consumers of stories, they are invited to become their architects.
The Magic of the Hybrid Narrative Boxes
The creation of five Hybrid Narrative Boxes is central to this project. Each box will function as a door leading to an alternative historical scenario, using physical and digital media to create an immersive experience.
Inside these boxes, students will discover material such as:
- Fictional newspapers: Reporting on events from a timeline that “never happened.”
- Character profiles: Detailed roles for students to embody.
- Artifacts: Maps, event cards or letters to guide the narrative.
- Educational videos: Multimedia content that bridges the gap between historical fact and fictional “uchrony.”

Together, these elements will invite students to engage with history in a new way, stepping inside it and seeing the past through the experiences and perspectives of diverse people.
Tools for educators and institutions
Beyond the creation of the boxes, the project also aims to provide teachers, researchers, and stakeholders with the structural support needed to use uchrony for educational purposes. To make sure this approach can be adopted in diverse educational contexts, the partners will develop a set of tools such as:
- A guide to help teachers integrate the uchrony methodology into their existing curriculum.
- Clear facilitation methods and session plans for using the narrative boxes in a classroom setting.
- A good practice guide gathering feedback from teachers
A European Collaboration
This project relies on a diverse range of perspectives, very much like the stories it encourages kids to build. The partnership spans across Europe and includes Les Apprimeurs, a French publishing and digital innovation company. It also involves ELAN, a Belgian non-profit organisation and network focused on enhancing literacy education, along with three partner schools: Narva Pähklimäe Kool (Estonia), Scoala Gimnaziala Nr. 7 Galati (Romania), and 41st school St. Patriarch Evtimii (Bulgaria). Rooted in diverse school systems, they will ensure that everything created responds to the actual needs of students and teachers, and is adaptable enough to travel across borders, languages, and educational contexts.
Why it matters
In an era of “fake news” and information overload, the ability to analyse a narrative becomes a superpower. By exploring immersive and interactive storytelling, students learn that history isn’t just a static list of dates: it’s a series of choices and perspectives. Along the way, thanks to the co-creation of alternative narratives, students also grow essential social skills such as empathy, collaboration, and problem-solving; skills that are, once more, at the heart of navigating the contemporary world.
Exploring the use and potential of uchronia in education is also a way to make historical and social topics more engaging and meaningful for young learners. It can also inspire teachers, inviting them to imagine the worlds students will build and the critical questions they will start to explore.
