The article “Social Media Literacy: A Conceptual Framework” proposes a new framework called Social Media Literacy (SoMeLit) to address the unique characteristics of social media. SoMeLit focuses on the user’s motivations, choices, and networks (Self), the technological affordances and governance of platforms (Medium), and the subjective nature of perceived realism (Reality). It redefines competencies from traditional media literacy to include self-analysis, evaluating personal biases and values, and contributing to civic goals. The framework aims to empower users by enhancing their critical engagement with social media, promoting valid information, and fostering a positive digital environment.
